How Often Should I Shock My Pool? The Miami Answer
There’s a bag of shock sitting in your garage right now. You bought it back in April. The bottom’s clumped up, the top is folded over twice, and you honestly couldn’t say when you last opened it.
That’s most pool owners here. Shocking is the chore that quietly falls off the list, mostly because when you search “how often should I shock my pool” you get advice written for a different climate. So here it is: about once a week in Miami, most of the year. That number surprises people who moved down from anywhere else.
Why Miami needs it way more often
Every generic pool guide online says shock every two to four weeks. That advice was written for a pool in Pennsylvania that sits under a tarp from October to May. It doesn’t survive down here.
Four things stack against you:
- UV. Unstabilized chlorine has a half-life of roughly 45 minutes in direct summer sun. Your pool is under that sun for eight or nine hours a day, twelve months a year.
- Water temperature. Miami pools sit in the high 80s from June through September, sometimes crossing 90. Warm water speeds up bacteria and algae growth, and it drives chlorine demand across the board.
- Rain. An afternoon storm dilutes your stabilizer and sanitizer while washing lawn fertilizer, phosphates, leaf litter, and other organic debris off every surface around the deck. Your defenses drop right as the food supply spikes.
- No off-season. People swim here in January. Every swimmer brings sunscreen and body oils into the water, and all of it eats chlorine. There’s never a stretch where the pool gets to rest.
Put those together and weekly isn’t aggressive. It’s just keeping up.
The weekly baseline
Pick a night and make it a habit. Sunday works for most people because you can see what the weekend did to the water.
Test first, always. If free chlorine is holding above 3 ppm and your combined chlorine reads under 0.5, you can sometimes skip a week in winter. In August you probably can’t. And shocking is only one piece of the routine, our 7 pool cleaning tips for Miami owners covers the rest of it.
Salt pool owners aren’t exempt. Your generator makes chlorine slowly and steadily, which is great for daily sanitizing and lousy for hitting the high concentration that burns off waste. A superchlorinate cycle runs 24 hours and often still doesn’t get there.
When to shock on top of the weekly dose
These are the triggers. Any one of them earns an extra bag, regardless of where you are in the schedule:
- Two inches of rain or more. Test the next morning, not during the storm.
- A pool party. Ten people for four hours puts a real dent in your sanitizer. Shock that night.
- Anything green, or walls that feel slick. Slick walls are early algae before you can see it. Catch it here and you save yourself a week of misery.
- After a hurricane or tropical storm. Debris, runoff, no circulation for days, and a filter full of who knows what. Assume you’re starting over.
- Water that smells strongly of chlorine. This one’s backwards from what everyone assumes, so it gets its own section.
The strong chlorine smell means you need more chlorine
I know how that sounds. Stay with me.
Free chlorine, the working kind, is basically odorless. What you’re smelling at a public pool or in your own backyard is chloramines, which is chlorine that already did its job. It grabbed onto sweat, sunscreen, urine, and organic gunk, and now it’s a spent molecule floating around irritating eyes and stinking up the deck.
So that sharp pool smell is the smell of used-up chlorine sitting in water that has no fresh chlorine left to deal with it. The only way to clear chloramines is to shock hard enough to reach breakpoint, roughly ten times your combined chlorine reading. Half a dose makes it worse, because you create more chloramines without burning off the existing ones.
If your eyes burn and the pool reeks, you’re under-chlorinated. Every time.
“One bag” is not a dose
This is where most people go wrong, and it’s an honest mistake because the bag says it treats a pool.
You need your gallons. For a rectangular pool: length times width times average depth times 7.5. A 15 by 30 with an average depth of 5 feet is about 16,900 gallons. Kidney and freeform shapes are trickier, so measure the widest points, run the same math, and shave off 15 percent.
Then the standard weekly dose is about one pound of 68 to 73 percent cal-hypo per 10,000 gallons, which lands free chlorine somewhere in the 7 to 10 ppm range. Fighting visible algae? Double or triple it, and expect to repeat the next day.
We had a customer in Kendall who called after two months of fighting cloudy water. He’d been shocking every week, one bag, like the label said. His pool was just over 26,000 gallons, deeper and longer than he’d guessed. So he’d been dosing at roughly a third of what the pool needed, for eight straight weeks, and paying for the privilege. Three properly sized doses over four days and it cleared.
Shock at dusk, not at lunch
Chlorine you add at 1pm is fighting the sun instead of the algae. A big share of it is gone before it finishes working.
Add shock after the sun is off the water, run the pump at least 8 hours overnight, and test in the morning. Brush the walls right after you dose so nothing settles on the plaster and bleaches a spot. The reason your shock eventually stops working
Here’s the slow-motion failure almost nobody catches: cyanuric acid creep.
Those stabilized tabs in your floater are trichlor, and trichlor delivers chlorine plus stabilizer every single time it dissolves. The chlorine gets consumed. The stabilizer doesn’t. It just accumulates, month after month, year after year.
You want cyanuric acid between 30 and 50 ppm. Around 80 it starts noticeably slowing your chlorine down. Past 100 you’re in the range where chlorine is chemically locked up and largely unavailable no matter how much you throw in. That’s the guy shocking twice a week with a green pool and no idea why.
The only real fix is replacing water. Partial drain, or backwash and refill, until the reading comes down. Test your CYA at least twice a year. Rain overflow helps a little, nowhere near enough to offset year-round tab use.
Or just stop thinking about it
Doing this right means testing weekly, knowing your gallons, watching CYA over time, and being home on the right night after a storm rolls through. Plenty of people manage it. Plenty of others buy the bag in April and find it clumped in the garage in August.
