Salt Water Pool vs Chlorine in South Florida: What Actually Costs More

Someone at a barbecue tells you their salt pool is chlorine free and the water feels amazing, and suddenly you’re wondering if you’ve been doing this the hard way for six years. The gentle part is true. The chlorine free part isn’t, and that misunderstanding is why the salt water pool vs chlorine debate goes sideways, and why people end up disappointed a year after converting.


A salt pool is a chlorine pool

That’s the whole misconception in one sentence. A salt system doesn’t replace chlorine. It manufactures chlorine, on site, from salt.

You add salt until the water sits around 3,000 to 3,500 ppm, roughly a tenth of ocean saltiness. That water passes through a cell on your equipment pad, where a low-voltage current runs across coated metal plates and splits the salt into chlorine. The chlorine sanitizes, gets used up, and reverts back to salt. Then the cell converts it again.

So you’re swimming in chlorinated water either way. The difference is who does the dosing. A traditional pool gets its chlorine from you or your tech, by the jug or the tab. A salt pool gets a small, steady drip from a box on the wall.

That steady drip is genuinely why the water feels softer. It isn’t the salt. It’s that you never get the chlorine spike that comes from dumping three gallons in on a Saturday.


The five year money question

Forget the sticker price and look at a five year window, because that’s where the two paths cross.

A traditional chlorine pool costs almost nothing up front. Your tab or liquid chlorine bill is the ongoing number, and in Miami it runs higher than most of the country because our sun burns chlorine off fast. You buy sanitizer forever. It never stops.

A salt pool front-loads the cost. You’re buying the generator and the cell, plus the install, plus electrical if your pad isn’t set up for it. After that your chemical tab drops way down. Mostly salt a couple times a year, and acid, which is cheap.

Then year three to seven arrives and the cell dies.

Cells are consumable. The coating on the plates wears off, output drops, and no amount of cleaning brings it back. Three to seven years is the honest range, and where you land inside it depends almost entirely on how you treat it. That’s the number people forget when they run the comparison, and it resets for as long as you own the pool.

The part national guides skip: salt is corrosive

This is where South Florida changes the math, and it’s what most articles written from an office in Denver leave out.

Salt eats metal. Slowly, quietly, and it doesn’t care that the concentration is low. What we see it go after here:

  • Handrails and ladder anchors, right down to the bolts holding them into the deck
  • Screen enclosure hardware, especially the fasteners at the base
  • Light rings and niche screws
  • Natural stone coping like travertine and some flagstone, where salt crystallizes in the pores and flakes the surface
  • Older heaters with copper heat exchangers that were never spec’d for salt

Now stack that on where you live. Anywhere near the water in Key Biscayne or Miami Beach, the air is already salty and your railings were already fighting a losing battle. A salt pool doesn’t create that problem. It speeds up a clock that’s already running.

None of this makes salt a bad choice. It makes it a choice with a maintenance tax. Rinse the deck and hardware with fresh water regularly, and if a pool deck remodel is on the table alongside a salt conversion, pick materials that can handle it.


Miami fill water scales cells faster

Our tap water is hard. High calcium, high alkalinity. Every time you top off in August, and you’re topping off constantly here, you’re pouring calcium into the pool.

Salt cells hate that. Electrolysis raises pH right at the plate surface, which is exactly the condition that makes calcium fall out of solution and crust onto the cell. White flaky scale on the plates. Output drops. The generator starts throwing low-salt or low-flow warnings even though your salt level is fine.

The fix is acid cleaning. Pull the cell and soak it in diluted muriatic acid, always adding the acid to the water rather than pouring water into acid, then rinse it well. Gloves and eye protection, and do it outside. The fumes are no joke. Most owners here need that once or twice a year, more if calcium hardness is running high. Skip it and the cell works harder for the same output, which is precisely how a seven year cell becomes a three year cell.

Two things keep cells alive longer: hold calcium hardness in range instead of letting it climb all summer, and keep pH down around 7.4 to 7.6. Salt pools drift alkaline on their own. That’s how the cell works, not a fault.

We had a customer in Kendall whose generator kept flashing a fault, and he’d already dumped four bags of salt in trying to fix it. His salt was fine, around 3,400. The cell was so scaled the plates looked like coral. An acid soak, a pH correction, and the fault cleared. He was a week away from ordering a cell he didn’t need yet.


You still test it. You still shock it.

The biggest disappointment with salt pools is finding out they aren’t automatic.

The generator handles baseline sanitizer. It does nothing for pH, alkalinity, calcium, stabilizer, or the chloramines that build up after a pool party or a week of storms. A cell puts out a low steady stream. It can’t produce the sudden high dose that breaks chloramines apart.

So you still shock. Either you hit the boost setting, which needs most of a day of runtime to do what a jug does in an hour, or you keep liquid chlorine around anyway. Most salt owners here do the second one.

You still test weekly, too. Salt pools arguably need more chemistry attention than a tab pool, since pH drift is constant and stabilizer matters even more when chlorine output is capped.


Who each one actually suits

Salt makes sense if: you swim often and care how the water feels, you’re already replacing equipment so the install is happening anyway, your deck and hardware are salt-tolerant, and you’ll be in the house long enough to get past the first cell replacement.

Traditional chlorine makes sense if: you’ve got exposed metal or natural stone around the pool, you’re close to the ocean, you want the lowest up-front number, or you’re selling in the next couple of years.

If you convert, the install matters more than the brand. The cell needs correct flow and orientation, bonding has to be right, and an undersized generator running at 100% output all day burns out fast.
