How to Lower Pool pH, and Why Alkalinity Keeps Undoing It

You test the water. pH reads 7.9. You add acid, feel good about it, and four days later it’s back at 7.9. So you search how to lower pool pH, buy more acid, and repeat. That loop is where a lot of pool owners live, and the acid isn’t the problem.

Almost nobody fixes alkalinity first.


Alkalinity is the shock absorber, pH is the reading

pH tells you how acidic or basic your water is right now. It’s a snapshot. It moves.

Total alkalinity is the water’s resistance to that movement, basically a cushion. When alkalinity sits where it should, pH holds steady and small additions don’t send it flying. When alkalinity is low, pH bounces around like nothing’s holding it in place. Because nothing is.

So if you’ve chased pH for months and it never sticks, stop looking at pH. Look at the number under it.


The numbers you’re aiming for

  • Total alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm. If you run a salt system, aim low in that range, around 80 to 90, because salt cells push pH up on their own.
  • pH: 7.4 to 7.6. Anything from 7.2 to 7.8 is workable, but 7.5 is the sweet spot where chlorine actually works and your plaster and equipment stay happy.

Above 7.8, your chlorine loses a big chunk of its killing power. You can have plenty of chlorine in the water and still get algae. That’s the situation behind most “I shocked it twice and nothing happened” stories.

Order matters more than anything else here. Alkalinity into range first, run a full circulation cycle, then read pH and correct what’s left. Do it backwards and you’ll be back with the same reading by the weekend.


What does baking soda do for a pool?

It raises total alkalinity. That’s the main job.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, the same stuff in the orange box, and pool-store “alkalinity increaser” is the identical chemical at a worse price per pound. About 1.5 pounds per 10,000 gallons raises alkalinity roughly 10 ppm. It nudges pH up slightly, but not much, which is why it’s the right tool when alkalinity is low and pH is fine.

Broadcast it slowly across the deep end with the pump running. Don’t dump the box in one spot. Give it a few hours of circulation, then retest. Big jumps are better split across two days.

One catch: if pH is already high and alkalinity is low, baking soda isn’t your product.


How to lower pool pH

Two options, and they do the same thing.

Muriatic acid is the liquid, usually 31 percent. Cheap and fast, and it’s what we carry on the truck. It also fumes and will ruin your shirt.

Dry acid (sodium bisulfate) is granular and much friendlier to handle. Costs more per dose, and it builds up sulfates over time in a pool that rarely gets drained. Fine for occasional use.

Both lower pH and alkalinity together. You can’t drop one without touching the other.

Adding acid safely:

  • Pump running, always. Circulation is what dilutes it.
  • Pour slowly at the deep end, close to the surface, and keep walking as you pour.
  • Never, ever pour acid into the skimmer. It goes straight into your pump, filter, heater, and salt cell at nearly full strength. We’ve seen heater cores destroyed this way, and it’s a repair that runs into real money.
  • If you’re diluting first, acid goes into water. Never water into acid.
  • Add about half of what you calculated, wait four to six hours, then retest.

How to raise pool pH

If pH is low and alkalinity is also low, use soda ash (sodium carbonate). It raises pH hard and alkalinity a little. Roughly 6 ounces per 10,000 gallons moves pH about 0.2.

If pH is low but alkalinity is already fine, skip the chemical and just aerate. Turn on the waterfall, or aim the return jets up so they break the surface. Aeration drives carbon dioxide out of the water, which raises pH without adding anything to it. Free and slow, and it never overshoots.


How to lower alkalinity

Slow, and there’s no shortcut. Acid lowers both pH and alkalinity, so you can’t target alkalinity alone. The trick is acid, then aerate.

Add acid to drive pH down to about 7.0. Alkalinity drops with it. Then aerate hard for a day, which brings pH back to 7.4 without bringing alkalinity back. Repeat.

Each cycle shaves maybe 15 to 25 ppm. Starting at 200 ppm, expect a week or two. People quit halfway through and land right back where they started.

Starting points, not gospel. Water temperature, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid level, and how far off you are all shift the real number. That’s why you dose half and retest.


How many gallons is my pool?

Measure length and width in feet, then average your depth. Average depth is shallow end plus deep end, divided by two.

  • Rectangle: length x width x average depth x 7.5
  • Oval: length x width x average depth x 6.7
  • Kidney or freeform: longest length x widest width x average depth x 6.7
  • Round: diameter x diameter x average depth x 5.9

A 15 by 30 rectangle running 3 feet to 6 feet averages 4.5 feet deep. So 15 x 30 x 4.5 x 7.5, about 15,200 gallons. Write it inside your equipment shed door. You’ll use it constantly.


Why Miami eats through acid

Our fill water is hard and runs alkaline. Every top-off after a hot week pushes pH up, and in summer that’s a lot of water.

Then there’s aeration. Waterfalls, spillover spas, bubblers, deck jets, and salt cells all strip carbon dioxide out of the water, and every bit of CO2 that leaves raises pH. Heat speeds it up. A pool with a big water feature running eight hours a day in August can climb from 7.5 to 8.0 in under a week. Dosing instructions on a jug assume an average pool somewhere in America, so you’re correcting more often here. That’s not you doing something wrong.
