Why Is My Pool Green? How to Clear It Fast in Miami Heat
You walked out to the patio with your coffee and the water is the color of a golf course pond. Friday it was fine. You didn’t do anything different. So why is my pool green all of a sudden? In Miami, the honest answer is that it happens fast here. Faster than any advice written for Atlanta or Phoenix will prepare you for. The fix works, but it is not one bag of shock and a hopeful night of filtering.
What actually turned it green
Algae is always in your water. Spores blow in on the wind and ride in on swimsuits. Normal, and it doesn’t matter, because chlorine kills them before they multiply.
Green means your free chlorine hit zero and stayed there. That’s the whole story. Everything else is just what pushed it to zero.
The usual culprits around here:
- Heavy rain flooding the pool with debris and runoff that eat up your chlorine
- Water sitting above 88 degrees, which burns chlorine noticeably faster
- Phosphates and nitrates washing in off the lawn, basically fertilizer for algae
- A pump running too few hours, so half the pool never really circulates
Phosphates don’t turn a pool green on their own. Plenty of pools run high phosphates and stay crystal clear because their chlorine holds. But once sanitizer drops, phosphates decide how fast a small problem becomes a big one.
Miami is genuinely faster
National guides talk about a pool “gradually” going green over a week or two. That’s not what happens in July here.
An afternoon storm drops two inches and pushes fertilizer runoff over the coping. Your stabilizer takes a hit at the same time. Your water is 90 degrees. Sun strips chlorine all day. A pool with borderline chemistry goes from slightly dull to visibly green in about 48 hours.
We had a customer in Kendall who called on a Tuesday after a Sunday storm. Pool was clear when he left for work Monday morning. By Tuesday afternoon he couldn’t see the second step. Nothing was broken. His chlorine was just sitting at 0.4 ppm when the rain hit.
Can you swim in it? No.
Straight answer, since people ask us this every week in summer.
Algae won’t poison you. But water that grew algae is water with no sanitizer, so everything else has been growing too. Pseudomonas causes hot tub rash and swimmer’s ear. E. coli and cryptosporidium cause exactly what you’d expect. Green water also means you can’t see a child on the bottom, which is dangerous in a way that has nothing to do with chemistry.
Wait until it’s clear and the chlorine is back in a normal range.
The sequence that actually clears it
Order matters more than product choice. Do these in this order, not whichever feels productive.
1. Test everything first. Free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and cyanuric acid. Strips give you a rough read, but a drop kit gives you numbers you can dose against. CYA especially, because it sets how much chlorine you actually need.
2. Fix the pH before you shock. This is the step everyone skips and it wastes more money than anything else. Above pH 7.8, a big chunk of the chlorine you add is chemically useless. Get pH down to about 7.2 with muriatic acid first. Shocking at 8.2 is throwing half your jugs in the trash.
3. Shock hard, and know the math. One gallon of 12.5% liquid chlorine raises free chlorine roughly 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons. If your CYA is around 50, you need to hold free chlorine near 20 ppm until the algae dies. For an average 15,000 gallon Miami pool that’s about 3 gallons to get there, then a gallon or two daily as the algae eats it. Use liquid, not cal hypo. Miami fill water is already hard on calcium.
4. Run the filter continuously. Not eight hours. Twenty-four, until it’s clear. Dead algae has to physically leave the water, and the only thing removing it is your filter.
5. Brush every surface, twice a day. Walls, steps, behind the ladder, the light niche. Brushing breaks the protective layer algae builds and exposes it to chlorine.
6. Backwash or clean the filter when pressure climbs. It will climb fast. When it’s 8 to 10 PSI over your clean baseline, the filter has basically stopped working. Clean it and keep going.
Then retest and re-shock. Every evening, because shocking at noon in July burns off before it does much. You keep the chlorine up until it stops dropping overnight, which is your sign the algae is dead.
How long it takes, honestly
- Cloudy with a green tint, caught same day: overnight, sometimes less
- Light green, bottom still visible: 24 to 48 hours
- Deep green, can’t see the main drain: 3 to 5 days
- Swamp with leaves and debris: a week or more, and sometimes a partial drain is cheaper
The frustrating middle stage is that the pool turns cloudy gray or milky blue before it turns clear. That’s dead algae suspended in the water and it means it’s working. Don’t stop shocking there. Most people do, and the green comes right back within a couple of days.
When this will not work
Some green pools don’t respond to any of the above, and it’s worth knowing before you spend $200 on chlorine.
Your filter can’t keep up. A DE or cartridge filter with worn media passes dead algae right back into the pool forever. If the water stays hazy after four days of continuous filtration, the filter is your problem. Cracked laterals and bad multiport valves do the same thing, and that’s a pool system repair job rather than a chemical one.
It’s yellow-green, not green. Mustard algae clings to shady walls, wipes off easily, and comes back in the same spot. It needs sustained higher chlorine, and every brush, float, toy, and skimmer net that touched the water has to be sanitized too or it just reseeds. Normal shock levels won’t finish it.
There are black spots on the plaster. Black algae roots into the surface itself. You have to scrub the heads off with a stainless brush before chlorine can touch what’s underneath. Skip that and it regrows from the same spots indefinitely.
Nothing’s been running for months. If the pump has been off and the water is opaque with debris, you’re past a shock treatment. Bringing an abandoned pool back to life covers what that takes.

Green water is usually a small maintenance gap that a storm found. The chlorine had been drifting low for a while, nobody noticed, and then two inches of rain finished the job.
